The Birdie — Garden

THIS RUN HAS CLOSED. The Birdie preorder ran Friday through Sunday, August 2. Orders placed in that window have gone into production and ship in about six weeks. The second run will be announced to the list first.

The wide brim. Full shade, a little theatrical, and by some margin the most canvas of the three — which makes it the one to choose if you want the hat to become a real piece of work rather than a weekend.

Hand-assembled in New York from Penelope canvas — the double-thread 20/10, which holds its structure in a way single-mesh canvas simply does not — and trimmed in leather from a New York tannery. The crown seam is bound in leather on the inside. That is the reason it keeps its shape through a season of being packed and unpacked rather than going soft on you. She is steamable to bring back to life.

It arrives blank. Every inch of it takes a stitch: crown, band, and a brim with room for a border, a scattered garden, or one very large flower. Work a single carnation in turkey work and shape it with scissors in an afternoon, or take the whole hat through a winter. There is no printed design and no right answer.

Sizing

Measure around your head, just above the ears.

• Size 1 — 22″ to 23″
• Size 2 — 23¼″ to 24″

If you fall between the two, take the larger.

The first run

The preorder closed Sunday, August 2. Because each hat is cut and assembled to order, preorders were final once the run went to production.
